Over half of us eat on the run, according to a recent study.
Unfortunately, this trend is making us heavier. Those who are "on the go" consume more fat, more soda, and more fast food.
Due to your busy lifestyle, you may be eating on the train or in your car. You might be eating at your desk at work.
This type of eating is probably hurting your effort to lose weight, because you are likely distracted or stressed at such times.
When you are stressed or distracted, your body absorbs nutrients less efficiently. You are also more likely to choose fattening "comfort food" or eat larger-than-normal portion sizes.
For all these reasons, sit down at a table for your meals whenever possible. Eliminate stress and distractions at the table by following these rules:
No TV watching
No reading
No laptop computer
No PDA
No talking on the phone
No arguing
No thinking about work
No working!
I think it is fine to listen to soothing instrumental music while you eat. Nothing with strong vocals or too much energy though. Quiet classical music is appropriate, for example.
I usually listen to New Age radio during my meals. To help reduce your stress level even more, consider saying a prayer of thanks before you begin to eat.
Or if you are not religious, just close your eyes for a moment of silence.
A prayer or moment of silence is like a brief, pre-meal meditation exercise that clears your mind and can help reduce stress. It helps you focus your mind on the task at hand, which is to provide healthful nutrition for your body.
